Description of my final project
Cervical Cancer Screening Predictor
For my project, I am taking on the role of a Data Scientist working at a health insurance company, interested in the number of cervical cancer biopsies are being completed that do and do not lead to a cancer diagnosis. Our insurance policy will cover these biopsies if the doctors involved with the case have identified concerning symptoms or patient behaviors.
Our goal is to predict, based on the data available, the patients who will have a positive cancer diagnosis after a biopsy. If we can predict who will (and who will not) have cancer accurately, we can reduce the number of biopsies performed which leads to a negative result. This saves the insurance company money and the patient from having any invasive procedures performed unnecessarily. We would also be able to identify women who are at higher risk for cervical cancer. We can communicate to them that they are at higher risk and should speak with their doctors and we will also be able to insure them properly.
Our secondary goal is to identify the features in the data which are most impactful for a positive cancer diagnosis. Once these are identified, if the features are behavioral, the insurance company would like to start an incentive program with members. In the program, if a member could prove that they do not practice the risky behaviors that could lead to higher chances of cervical cancer, that member would be eligible for an annual discount on insurance (or similar reward).
Why should someone hire you?
You should hire me because I am hard-working with a passion for learning new skills. At my current company, I have worked on the business side and the IT side of the organization. The business side gave me the chance to hone my communication and presentation skills. I ran a global change management program and was able to convince leaders across our organization to modernize the way employees were doing their jobs. When I moved to the IT side, I completed my Master’s degree while working full time, gaining more knowledge around data analytics and data science, and was running my own projects within a couple of months of the transition.
I am well balanced in having the mathematical background and technical skills to understand Data Science and create complex models. I also know the importance of being able to translate and communicate those models so less technical folks will be able to understand and take action on them.
Complete the following sentence: “With Data Science, I am most passionate about…”
…making a difference in people’s lives and seeing a real outcome. This can come in the form of health care, national security, or another field where a large group of people can be positively impacted by the patterns we can now identify in data.
